The Christ Cathedral Arboretum has been awarded a Citation of Merit in the Docomomo US Modernism in America Awards, for the outstanding restoration of the historic building. Cannon Building executed the restoration project.
The jury noted the impressive effort to reinforce and strengthen the original structure and to hide new air conditioning systems, while retaining the original design intent. Among the oldest buildings on the Christ Cathedral campus, the Arboretum was designed by world famous architect Richard Neutra, and dedicated in 1961. At more than 22,000 square feet, the structure served as the original sanctuary space for Crystal Cathedral founder Dr. Robert Schuller’s congregation.
